Palm Sunday – What can we learn from the Gospel Readings on Palm Sunday?

Palm Sunday is one of the most iconic Sundays during the entire year. Not only do Catholics often process into the Church with palms on Palm Sunday, but we read about Jesus’ procession into Jerusalem in the Gospel reading.

1. Why did the Jewish people lay down the palm branches before Jesus and shouting Hosannah in the highest?

The Passion narrative of Matthew begins with the preparation of the Passover meal (Matt 26:17-18).

2. Why did Matthew focus on the Passover meal?

After the Passover meal, Matthew gives the account of Jesus at the garden of Gethsemane on the Mount of Olives (Matt 26:30).

3. What is the significance of the agony at the garden of Gethsemane on the Mount of Olives?

Check out this video with Dr. Brant Pitre where he covers these three topics for Palm Sunday.
